Our Study of Indonesia
This past semester we have been engaged in a class-wide project on the geography of Indonesia and the history of Bali. Students were organized in groups with a specific focus on the physical, political, economic or cultural geography of Indonesia. This work culminated in a large plasticine map that reflected all of the the student’s in-depth research.
We also went on two outings to gather information on the history of Bali.
One was to the new interactive Majapahit Museum in Tanah Lot.
The other one was to the Bajra Sandhi Monument and Museum in Denpasar.
During those outings students took notes and drew illustrations covering the prehistoric, ancient, early modern and modern history of Bali.
Each group’s work is being applied to the creation of our own timeline of Balinese history which we will add to our classroom history resources.
Through this work children have worked in mixed age groups which has helped to strengthen our community, develop leadership skills and build their research skills. The work and resources they have created also greatly supports their understanding of their learning in a fun and interactive way.
