Our Recent Study in Environment and Ecology
This semester our community has been focusing on the environment and ecology with a strong emphasis on how a responsible and thoughtful focus on our immediate environment impacts the well-being of all plants and animals and the sustainability of a healthy planet.
We began first term with in-house workshops on simple actions we can take in our space, home and community to lesson the impacts of pollution and damage to the greater environment such as being mindful of how much waste we contribute, using an effective recycling program, minimizing the uses of electricity and to reuse as many of our resources as possible. We provided lessons of different types of soils and how to create our own compost using leftover food and plants (green components) and cardboard, paper, pencil shavings and dead leaves (brown components) which we have been using to grow fruit and vegetables in our local community garden. We also continued our local garbage clean ups at the field we use for PE.
Our students have also been receiving lessons in ecology in which they are learning about the various biomes, ecosystems and webs of life that make up our biosphere and the danger of different types of pollution on the health and well-being of these systems of which we belong. We also had lessons on how various types of energy are accessed, formed and used and the impact each type one has on our environment and conserving energy and natural resources.
We extended our learning with an outing to the mangrove forest in Nusa Dua, where we could observe first-hand the topography, plants and animals that form this unique biome and learn how the large amount of plastic and other garbage in this area is negatively affecting the health of its ecosystem. We were privileged to have one of the gardeners of the mangrove nursery offer his time to explain in detail the web of life within the mangrove, how the pollution was impacting the health of the biome and to answer any questions. We finished off our study with a garbage clean-up.
We still have limited spaces available for 6- and 7-year-olds. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more about or program.
